Eiji Toyoda Legend: No Ricky Bobby

I reckon your take that Toyota isn’t winning over many fans in Nascar country is nearly universally right (“Toyota Wins Few Fans at the Track,” Marketplace, July 24), and that sentiment offers an fascinating cultural subtext through which to consider the sport. But, it may be somewhat problematic to claim that race fans’ disdain for Kyle Busch is due to the fact that he drives a foreign car. While you’re quite right that his driving a Toyota certainly doesn’t help, I reckon the first “two strikes” you mentioned in your article — his cockiness and arrogance — ensured long ago that he’s a fan-favorite to boo. He was given his moniker “Rowdy Busch” for his rough driving and lack of respect for veteran drivers, and many fans dislike him simply by association to his older brother Kurt Busch, who is less than well loved in his own right.
