President-elect Barack Obama has chosen former Senate leader Tom Daschle as his health secretary, enlisting a third Washington insider in the early stages of Cabinet-building by the president-elect who promised change. Sen. Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, seemed ever more likely to be Obama’s pick for secretary of state. Clinton is deciding whether to take that post as America’s top diplomat, associates said. On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, has agreed to all of the conditions sought by Obama’s transition team to eliminate potential conflicts of interest if Hillary Clinton becomes secretary of state, people close to the Clintons said Wednesday. Bill Clinton accepted several restrictions on his business and philanthropic activities to remove any obstacle to his wife’s nomination if the Cabinet job is formally offered and accepted, said the associates, who questioned that they not be identified because they were disclosing confidential negotiations.

Janet Napolitano, Homeland Security Secretary?

Written by on Wednesday, November 19th, 2008 in Latest News.

CNN is reporting Wednesday night that Obama has chosen Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano to become secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

President-elect Barack Obama’s top choice for secretary of homeland security is Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, multiple Democratic sources close to the transition told CNN on condition of anonymity.

One source said he believed the final choice depends on the vetting of the Democratic governor, much like the selection of Eric Holder for attorney general.

Politico has more details on the Napolitano pick:

Napolitano (na-pawl-i-TAW-noh) brings law-and-order experience from her stint as the Grand Canyon State’s first female attorney general. One of the nation’s most prominent female elected officials, she made frequent appearances on behalf of Barack Obama during the campaign. She was re-elected to a second four-year term in 2006.

Transition insiders have long expected she would be offered a Cabinet slot, although she had also been mentioned for other posts, including attorney general.
