CALIFORNIA Wildfire strikes Santa Barbara SANTA BARBARA — Fierce winds blew a wildfire into Southern California homes, forcing residents to flee as columns of smoke rose from a scenic coastal enclave. TV news helicopters showed homes ablaze in Santa Barbara, but the number could not be immediately determined because of thick smoke that scattered embers over the city. Authorities ordered 2,000 homes evacuated. Santa Barbara County fire Capt. David Sadecki said the fire was moving rapidly, whipped by 50 mph gusts. Sadecki said two firefighters were overrun by flames and were hospitalized, but he had no other details. Another firefighter earlier suffered a head injury.
