Rangers hand Red Sox fifth straight loss (AP)

Nelson Cruz and Josh Hamilton were entwined in a hug, having avoided a bone-rattling collision. One of Texas’ All-Star outfielders even had the ball in his glove. Cruz’s running catch to end the seventh inning, when the right fielder finished up in the arms of Hamilton, helped preserve a 3-1 victory for the Rangers on Wednesday night and a three-game sweep of the slumping Boston Red Sox.

NATICK, Mass. — A white police sergeant accused of racism after he arrested renowned black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. at his home insisted Wednesday he won’t apologize for his treatment of the Harvard professor, but President Barack Obama said police had acted “stupidly.”

Gates has demanded an apology from Sgt. James Crowley, who had responded to the home near Harvard University to investigate a report of a burglary and demanded the scholar show him identification. Police say Gates at first refused and then accused the officer of racism.

Oxy discovers large oil field in Kern

Occidental Petroleum Corp. on Wednesday announced its discovery of a large oil field in Kern County, a find experts say could boost local employment, increase tax revenues and reduce the state’s reliance on imported oil.

Based on preliminary exploration, Los Angeles-based Oxy said it believes the reserves contain the equivalent of 150-250 million barrels of oil. That’s about one-tenth of the state’s on-shore oil reserves, or about a year’s worth of California oil production, according to state officials.
