The White House tried Monday to douse speculation that it might raise taxes on the middle class in violation of President Obama’s campaign promise, just a day after two of his top economic advisers left the door open to such a go to rein in spiraling deficits.

Former President Bill Clinton made a surprise trip to North Korea try to win release of American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who have been sentenced to 12 years hard labor.

The reclusive nation’s official Korean Central News Agency showed footage of Clinton landing in Pyongyang in an unmarked jet Tuesday and greeted at the airport by North Korean officials, including chief nuclear negotiator Kim Kye Gwan and vice parliamentary speaker Yang Hyong Sop. He smiled and bowed as a young girl presented him with flowers.
