Reuters – The Philippines ordered the evacuation of people living in low-lying coastal areas on Friday as a “super typhoon” threatened devastation a week after flash floods killed nearly 300 people in and around Manila.

Scarbroughs’ 116-year Austin retail tradition to end

Sixty-two years ago, Carolyn Sharkey says, she shopped for clothes with her mother at Scarbroughs department store on Congress Avenue. She remained a loyal customer as the Austin retailer added and closed stores over the years. But when she arrived Thursday afternoon at the store’s current location, on North Lamar Boulevard, Sharkey learned that her relationship with the store would soon be over. Scarbroughs will close by the end of the year, ending an Austin retail tradition that started in 1893.
