Sonny Weems scored a career-high 20 points, Jose Calderon had 16 and the Toronto Raptors snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the New York Knicks 102-96 on Friday night.

Jarrett Jack and Amir Johnson each scored 14 and Hedo Turkoglu had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Raptors, who won on a night when all-star Chris Bosh was forced to go to hospital.

Johnson started in place of Bosh, whose plans to end a six-game absence caused by a sprained left ankle were finished when he left for tests about an hour before the game complaining of severe stomach cramps. A Raptors staffer said during the third quarter that Bosh was still in hospital, receiving intravenous fluids.

Weems scored 10 of his points in the fourth quarter and finished with nine rebounds, while Johnson had eight rebounds for the Raptors.

David Lee had 23 points and 18 rebounds for the Knicks, while Wilson Chandler added 18 points. Tracy McGrady and Danilo Gallinari each scored 13, and Al Harrington and Sergio Rodriguez both had 10 for New York, which has lost 11 of 13.

Toronto led 92-83 with 5:53 left but Bill Walker made a layup, Gallinari hit a three-pointer and, after a timeout, added a jumper from the top to make it 92-90. Jack stopped the run with a reverse layup and Calderon hit a jumper, giving the Raptors a six-point lead, 96-90, with 3:16 remaining.

Lee (12) and Harrington (seven) combined for 19 of New York’s 24 points in the first, but Johnson scored eight and Antoine Wright had seven for the Raptors, who led 31-24 after one quarter.

The Knicks tied it with a 9-2 run to start the second and, just over a minute later, Turkoglu went to the locker room to get his sore left ankle re-taped.

Toronto pushed its lead back to seven before the Knicks rallied again, but Turkoglu returned and made two free throws with three seconds left, giving the Raptors a 53-52 lead at the half.

Bargnani had to leave in the third after he was knocked backward into Johnson and suffered a cut on the back of his head. He needed three skin staples to close the cut, but returned before the end of the quarter and helped Toronto take a 78-77 edge into the fourth.

Roethlisberger accused of sexual assault

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is being investigated in an allegation of sexual assault at a Georgia nightclub, police said Friday.

Police say the alleged incident occurred early Friday at the Capital City nightclub in Milledgeville, about 135 kilometres southeast of Atlanta. The National Football League player owns a home nearby.

The two-time Super Bowl champion and some of his friends were seen visiting some local restaurants and bars earlier Thursday night.

“He’s been identified as being at the scene and there are allegations naming him as the perpetrator,” Deputy chief Richard Malone said.

Malone said Roethlisberger had been with three other people who were mingling with another group that included the alleged victim. Malone said the woman and her party contacted a nearby police officer following the alleged assault.

Several areas of the bar were considered a crime scene, but Malone would not elaborate.

Roethlisberger and the alleged victim have been interviewed and the woman was taken to hospital, where she was treated and released, Malone said.

Separately, Roethlisberger has been sued by a woman who claims he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel. The Steelers star denies those allegations and has questioned for counter-hurts.

“Last night, Ben and his friends met a group of women and everyone mingled together throughout the evening,” the player’s agent, Ryan Tollner, said in the statement.

“We have spoken to law enforcement. Based on information currently available, an allegation was made against Ben, which appeared to be dismissed after a preliminary investigation last night. Obviously, given the prior accusation against Ben, we are skeptical of motive, but we will continue to co-operate with everyone involved.”

Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett released a statement from the team. “We are gathering information and that is the only comment we have at this time,” it said.

Roethlisberger, who turned 28 last week, has led the Steelers to two Super Bowl championships in his six seasons as starting quarterback, but there have been some problems off the field.

He suffered a concussion and required surgery for severe facial injuries in 2006 after an off-season motorcycle crash in which he was not wearing a helmet.

A Reno casino director in 2009 accused Roethlisberger of rape, filing a civil suit in connection with events following a celebrity golf tournament the previous year. She later filed a motion to dismiss her suit.

Canada in hole at Davis Cup tennis event

Written by on Friday, March 5th, 2010 in Latest News.

Colombia has stormed out to a 2-0 lead over Canada in their Americas Zone, Group I second-round Davis Cup tie in Bogota.

Carlos Salamanca defeated Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont., 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 in one singles match Friday while Santiago Giraldo got past Milos Raonic, also of Thornhill, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on the clay courts at Club Campestre El Rancho.

Salamanca was pressed into action when Colombia’s top-ranked player, Alejandro Falla, couldn’t play because of an injury.

“It’s certainly not my wish to be down 2-0 after the first day,” said Canada’s captain, Martin Laurendeau of Montreal. “We need the doubles [Saturday] and then hopefully we can turn things around here.

“It’s not an simple task but it’s been done before so it gives us hope.”

On Saturday, Toronto’s Daniel Nestor, the world’s top-ranked doubles player, will team up with Raonic to face Salamanca and Juan-Sebastian Cabal.

Nestor, who also serves as team coach, is a Davis Cup veteran, holding the record for most years played by a Canadian in the Davis Cup (18), most victories (40), most doubles wins (25) and most ties (36). Nestor also has a stellar 25-4 record in Davis Cup doubles play.

The reverse singles Sunday will see Polansky facing Giraldo while Raonic takes on Salamanca.

The winner of the tie will advance to a World Group playoff in September with a chance to qualify for the World Group in 2011.
