Regina’s Reuben Ross overcame a shaky start to capture a bronze medal in the men’s three-metre event Friday at the season-opening FINA Grand Prix diving competition in Germany.

Australian Ethan Warren was first with 485.30 points with Russian Illya Kvasha taking second with 472.70. Ross was third with 458.10 to capture his third career Grand Prix medal.

Ross nearly didn’t make it out of the preliminary round, finishing 11th with the top 12 advancing. He won his group in the semifinals to advance to the final.

“I always had the confidence that I could do the dives,” said Ross. “So after the preliminaries I just told myself not to be too tentative. I know now it’s vital to dive with confidence.”

Francois Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., reached the semifinals and placed fourth in his group for eighth overall.

Sheng Ping Wu of China won the women’s 10-metre event, finishing ahead of compatriot Yi Ying Xing. Loudy Wiggins of Australia was third.

Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal and Rachel Kemp of Victoria were eliminated in the semifinals, finishing seventh and 11th overall, respectively.
